Buying a house or moving home is traumatic enough in itself. When yo look at a house have you thought of the crime & social implications?

Most prospective house buyers are usually well informed about questions to ask about the condition of a house/local planning/subsidence/land-fill etc. But a little often considered aspect is the implications for you and your family with regards to the anti-social behaviour, criminal or noise aspects. Here is a brief guide:

1. Is the road a rat run for trafic?

2. What is the condition of neighbouring front gardans? ( Poorly kept gardens can be an indicatioin of something else).

3. Are there are lot of properties for sale in the street- find out why (perhaps there is a large planning application pending, or serious crime)

4. Are there many rented houses or muitiple occupancies in the area? Sadly such dwellings have a higher proportion of anti social behaviour/crime/illegal immigration than others.

5. Do many students live in the street or the area? Such areas/streets have a much higher level of anti-social behaviour, late night noise, etc.

6. Is there a pub nearby? What are its opening hours? Are there ay applications for music license or late ngiht opening?

7. What is the state of repair of the houses nearby or the area in general?

8. Is there any social housing nearby (that is where problem families get dumped)? Are any houses used for immigration by the Council?

9. Have there been any incidents or racism or civil unrest in the area?

10. Has there been any activity of political or religious extremism?

11. What is the local crime rate? Check with the police or the local Neighbourhood Action Groiup or Council.

12. Ascertain the structure and standard of the local Neighbourhood Policing.

13. Check the local papers on line for crime/social problems/ policing etc.
